War of the Roses is a victory for young Huddersfield side
Huddersfield RUFC under 11s side toured this weekend across the Pennines to the Vale of Lune club and were victorious in their age group coming top out of 16 sides. The competition, featuring many of the big names in North West rugby union, was tough. But not tough enough for the young Tykes.
In the qualifying stages the Lockwood boys saw off Liverpool Waterloo, Trafford Hawks and Vale of Lune. Their play was characterised by strong tackling and excellent kicking from the fly half, Connor Field, together with an opportunistic try scored from a tap and go penalty by William Cambridge and a further try scored by Tom Kay.
Securing a place in the semis meant facing the might of Preston Grasshoppers with backs of forward proportions. Intense and physical, it was a very tough encounter. Huddersfield second row Harry Clarke dived to score a try at full stretch which was trounced by a Hopper back grounding a breakaway try. In reply, Will Cambridge scored the decider for Huddersfield.
With victory in their sights the boys kept their composure in a Clash of the Titans final against the North West’s premier side, Fylde. The Huddersfield lads were totally dominant in the rucking and their kicking was effective and well-timed. Joe Beaven bossed his opposing scrum half near the Fylde line, after which Huddersfield turned them over and scored their first try (Connor Field).
Flowing moves from the Huddersfield backs set up the 2nd try, scored by William Cambridge. Fuelled by the Huddersfield momentum Harry Clarke then scored a short range try off a rolling maul. With barely time to snatch a breath, Huddersfield prop, Dan Millington placed another over the line, leaving him to now boast a higher try scoring total than former England international, Jason Leonard! A late substitution, Henry Wilkinson, showed his speed and agility through a brilliant pick up, inter-changing passes with lightning winger Myles Watson, and dodged through a weighty defence to score the conclusive fifth try.
Throughout the match every player made their mark, and did their job – Aaron Wilson had some excellent runs down the left wing, Tom Kay made an exceptional clearance from the line (when fly half Conner Field was under a ruck) and Jacob Glover made bullocking runs to repeatedly break the gain line. The subs made their impact too, including Rohan Stacey-Grant controlling play at scrum half.
The result was thoroughly deserved by the team, who impressed everyone there and were an absolute credit to Huddersfield RUFC.
