New Head Coach – Gareth Lewis
We are delighted to announce that Gareth Lewis has agreed to become Huddersfield Rugby Union Football Club’s head coach for the 2013-14 season.
Gareth has been a stand out player and key contributor to all training sessions over the last few years. He always sets the standard in terms of performance, professionalism and club commitment. Gareth has completed his level 2 RFU coaching course and will also be able to draw on his coaching experience from his work and other influences throughout his long and successful rugby career.
After initially starting at Huddersfield YMCA, Gareth came through the HRUFC Age Grade section. Gareth made is HRUFC 1st team debut as an 18 year old under then Director of Rugby Simon Irving. Following two successful seasons he was recruited into the Leeds Tykes academy where he learnt his trade under future England Head Coach Stewart Lancaster. Gareth was then approached by Kevin McCallion at Halifax RUFC where he became an established national league flanker winning league titles, National and County Cups. Following the sad demise of Halifax he then made the step up to the Championship to play for Manchester before Mark Sowerby brought him back to his home town club. Since being back at Huddersfield Gareth has helped the club climb to its highest ever league position and was part of the Yorkshire Cup winning side two years ago.
Throughout his career Gareth has been selected to represented Yorkshire on a number of occasions and takes his place in this seasons county championship squad.
Gareth will be assisting on recruitment as the management look to build three competitive sides within this great club. With many injured players returning to the fore and a large group of confirmed additions it really will be an exciting season at Lockwood Park.
