Huddersfield Falcons 5-50 Preston Grasshoppers XV
Huddersfield RUFC’s Falcon side suffered defeat by an overwhelming Preston Grasshoppers Second XV.
Facing a stronger side than they can expect to in their own regular season, Field were unable to handle the speed of Hoppers backs as they ran in eight tries.
But Huddersfield defended resiliently for long periods with last ditch tackles keeping Hoppers out from scoring further tries.
However Huddersfield started well and went close through Oliver Scrimshaw in the corner.
But the rest of the half belonged to Preston who scored three tries before half time.
Though it looked like Alex Brook was most likely to score for Field, it was Jack Smith who scored a try in the corner to narrow the deficit at half time, in favour of Hoppers at 17-5.
But it was Hoppers that wrapped up a convincing victory in the second half.
Preston brought on three substitutes, including Sam Whyte at scrum half who set up the next the try to send Preston on their way to victory.
But Preston continued their dominance and scored a further four tries to run away with the game that the Falcons will be happy to see the back of.
Though Field can take plenty of heart that they battled to the end and kept the score line narrower to what it could have been.
