Huddersfield secure important points at Wharfedale

Huddersfield Academy v Wharfedale
Threshfield
13th October 2013

HRUFC’s Academy team travelled to Threshfield with 14 fit players due to another round of injuries and unavailability’s. A daunting task.

However it goes to prove that with desire and a lot of effort it is possible to overcome the numerical advantage of the opposition and so Huddersfield proved by coming away with an important draw and 4 league points.

The Huddersfield scoring started in the first half. After conceding an early try through some defensive errors close to the ruck, Huddersfield hit back, two strong waves of attack giving the ball to Lewis Workman to dummy and breach the defence for an excellent try, one that he converted.

Wharfedale then hit back with two tries of their own, one out wide on the right, the generous Huddersfield touch judge deciding the Wharedale wingers foot was not in touch and the other following some good driving play through the Greenmen’s forwards under the Huddersfield posts.

However Huddersfield we never out of the game and when exciting winger Gypsey Black bulldozed through half the Wharfedale pack it looked like he was certain to score under the posts, but for a last ditch defender grabbing hold of his shirt enough the slow him down. Black through had presence of mind to offload to his wing partner Matt Sherring-Lucas, who dived under the posts. Workman converting the 2 points.

Free scoring centre Chris Cooper then scored following some excellent interpassing from the Huddersfield backs on the left-hand side of the pitch, pacey Cooper skinned the defence to score under the posts. Workman converting.

Huddersfield’s spectators nerves on edge, the Huddersfield team received the deep restart and moved the ball right to left in an attempt to find the all-important winning try. However, the Wharfedale centre anticipated the wide pass and intercepted to score under the posts.

With seconds left on the clock the Huddersfield lads had one last chance to score. A superb restart from Workman was chased hard by the Huddersfield forwards which caused a knock on from Wharfedale. From the resulting scrum, Huddersfield attacked the Wharfedale line for Oliver Kirk to pick up at the ruck to drive over the line to score the fourth and bonus point try. The crowd fell silent as Workman set up the conversion some 25 metres to the left of the posts. Workman nailed the kick high and true to level the game and share the points.

An excellent closed fought game, nip and tuck all the way to the end. The 14 Huddersfield Academy players should be proud of themselves for their achievement away at Wharfedale, not an easy place to play.

Final score, Huddersfield Academy 26 – Wharfedale Colts 26

Huddersfield too strong for Yarnbury in U18 National Cup as Cooper bags four tries

Huddersfield U18 v Yarnbury U18
Lockwood Park
20th October 2013

The Huddersfield Academy team had a break from the Yorkshire Senior Colts Premiership for a week, entertaining Yarnbury at Lockwood Park in Round 2 of the U18’s National Cup. Although without the Services of the likes of Jordan Higo and Sam Crompton, Huddersfield were still able to field a strong tea, in particular welcoming back Mikey Hramiak following a 2 week suspension.

Dominating the game with ball in hand, Huddersfield scored early through the excellent Chris Cooper (2) and Matt Sherring-Lucas. Although Yarnbury remained competitive through the first half, particularly at the breakdown, the Huddersfield runners were too much.

The second half saw 2 further tries for Chris Cooper, one for his co centre Danny “Randall” Grainger, another for Matt Sherring-Lucas and maybe the individual try of the game for the bulldozing winger Gypsey Black beating numerous tackles to score under the posts.

Lewis Workman was successful with four conversion and Grainger one.

With four U19 players on the touchline and two returning from unavailability / injury, the playing numbers are getting back to strength for the Academy. Competition for places and brighter times ahead after a difficult opening to the season.

Final score, Huddersfield U18’s 50 – Yarnbury U18’s 0
