Our Under 12s squad returned from the Sandal Rugby Tournament as winners after a superb performance at this prestigious event adding the trophy to the District Cup won in November.
This continues the fantastic season that the boys are having to-date. The first match was against West Park Leeds, the tournament favourites, who they have never beaten before!
After a great performance, the boys won by three tries to one, and found a new confidence. Castleford were beaten by one try to nil and then a massive Scunthorpe side were beaten by two tries to nil.
Having only conceded one try, our boys were up against the home side in the final. The Sandal team, buoyed by a strong home support, threw everything at the Huddersfield line – which was finally breached just before half time. This galvanised the Huddersfield boys and trademark quick rucking rugby led to three unanswered tries and a well-deserved win.
The pleasing aspect for the head coach, Andrew Brian, was that all 20 boys played their part at some point during the day.
The team is now looking forward to the Huddersfield Tournament, which the main junior section is hosting on 6th April – where we’re expecting over 400 players to converge on Lockwood Park for a rugby jamboree. This is on top of the 450 children likely to attend the younger age group festival on 30th March, and it is hoped the tropical weather experienced at Sandal can be repeated on those days!
