MATCH REPORT – HRUFC V CALDY

By N Lawless

A rocking Lockwood Park saw Huddersfield overturn a 12-point half-time deficit to beat Caldy 24-17 and continue their perfect start to 2015.

It’s now four wins in a row for Gareth Lewis’ men, continuing their rise away from the relegation zone and up the table.

Huddersfield drew first blood in the game, Elliot Knight breaking down the left wing at lightning fast speed to score the opening try, which went unconverted.

It took just two minutes for Caldy to hit back, with a penalty from Richard Vasey reducing the deficit.

The game became slightly bogged down in the middle of the pitch, no real chances being created by either side for the rest of the opening half-hour.

Eventually Caldy sprung Huddersfield’s defence, with Paul Sellwood finding some space in the centre of the pitch and charging through at great pace to score the away side’s first try, Vasey converting.

Huddersfield searched for a reply before the break but failed to create any real openings, with Caldy’s defence looking organised and strong.

On 36 minutes, a prolonged Huddersfield move was eventually intercepted by Nicholas Royle who simply ran through the deserted ‘Field half to score a try against the run of play.

Vasey’s conversion made sure Caldy went into half-time 17-5 up with the home side facing an uphill battle.

Huddersfield returned looking much sharper and put immediate pressure on the Caldy defence, roared on by the Lockwood Park crowd.

Within five minutes of the restart, a huge push saw Austen Thompson force the ball over to cut Caldy’s lead, substitute Joel Hinchliffe completing the conversion.

Elliot Hodgson almost added to the scoring five minutes later, after making a great take of the ball form a high kick and sprinting past the Caldy defence, only being prevented a try by a last-ditch tackle.

It didn’t take long for the try to eventually come however, Tom Hodson kicking the ball beyond the Caldy defence and catching it himself to complete the move and bring Huddersfield level.

The Huddersfield onslaught continued with a penalty in 58th minute, with Hinchliffe missing this time.

However, the home side couldn’t quite maintain the initial momentum and Caldy began to play their way back into the match, pushing Huddersfield deep into their own half for a ten minute period.

‘Field held out stoically during this spell and got their reward five minutes from time. Heavy pressure led to a line-out deep in the Caldy half and a heavy push saw captain Nick Sharpe force the ball over the line, much to the crowd’s delight.

Hinchliffe completed the conversion to put Huddersfield 24-17 up and they held out in the last five minutes to complete another impressive win on their superb run.
