Rugby League Legend Danny Brough is hoping to bring defensive solidarity against Wharfedale: Match Preview.
Rugby league legend Danny Brough has joined Huddersfield RUFC as their new defence coach. The former Huddersfield Giants skipper and Scottish international is hoping to stamp his knowledge on the team and help bolster the defensive frailties which have led to a string of poor results in recent weeks.
Brough, who is the 5th highest Rugby League scorer of all time, has been playing social rugby at the club and the Lockwood Park outfit are hoping that his involvement in the coaching set up will help the senior team get back to winning ways.
The 2013 Super League 'Man of Steel' said, “All the players are on board and the coaching staff are really helpful, its going to be a process to try and fix some of the defensive problems we have been having but the lads have the determination to do it”.
Huddersfield have struggled so far this season and are rock bottom of the table having lost their last eight games. They host Wharfedale in National 2 North League on Saturday 9th December after a two-week hiatus. The Dalesmen arrive at Lockwood Park in 3rd place in the table and in fine form. They have won 8 out of 11 games with their impressive home form being the driving force behind their exceptional start to the season. Six of their eight wins have come at The Avenue. Danger men Oliver Cicognini and James Coulson have 5 tries apiece and will need to be shut down by Huddersfield if they have any chance of turning round their recent poor run.
Brough is under no illusion how difficult the game will be, saying, “It’s going to be a tough challenge, we are all aware of that. Its going to be heavy going and we have to be fitter and stronger to try and get a result.” Huddersfield will be without skipper Ed Barber through suspension. He is a key man who has scored 6 tries this season. Brough added “It’ll be tough without Ed but we know if we can put the performances in, the results will look after themselves”.
Frozen pitches have meant that Field’s two previous games against Otley and Bllingham have been postponed. In reflection Brough commented, “It would have been nice to have continued playing and we know it will take more than a couple of weeks. We are putting a defensive structure in to set as our benchmark. The break has given me another week to get things in place”.
Huddersfield will hope that the rugby league star can help fix their defensive woes and that they can pick up a result against Wharfedale on Saturday. Kick-off is at 2.15pm.
