JUNIOR ACADEMY RUGBY UNION
HUDDERSFIELD RUFC V HULL IONIANS
In glorious sunshine a big crowd were treated to a fantastic game of rugby on the opening day of the Junior Colts League at Lockwood Park.
The hard work put in by the Huddersfield players over the summer, just had the edge over a strong Hull side to win 38 – 29. Missing a couple of players, all the Huddersfield team put in a hard shift and they deserved their victory.
The coaching team must also be congratulated for preparing the team both in fitness and technique but perhaps the most satisfying aspect was the home players ability to read the game and adapt their play to suit the conditions and the opposition with some excellent driving mauls.
Huddersfield scored their points through two tries by centre Isaac Griffiths, a try each for Cian Gregg and Titus Gwaze from well executed catch and drives from the lineouts and one for David McGowan following good support play. Harry Newman got three penalty goals and two conversions.
Hull scored a well worked converted try from a scrum and were gifted a try by poor Huddersfield tackling and came back into the game to make the score respectable with two late tries.
The Yorkshire Society referee Mike Dickinson summed it up with his match comments “a terrific, hard fought game played in a terrific spirit”
