Vern Cotter will be our special guest this Saturday for the Sandal Game. A number of former Huddersfield team mates will be joining him for the pre-match lunch. If you played with Vern in the 80's please come along and make him feel welcome. Vern played his local rugby for Manukau in New Zealand in 1980 before coming to play for Huddersfield RUFC for two season between 1984 and 1986. He was a large physical presence as a number 8 and brought a certain "Southern Hemisphere" brand of physicality to the team. Vern also captained the team for the second half of his final season. Vern went back to New Zealand and continued to play for Manukau until 1990 before heading off to France to play for FC Lourdes. Vern retired from playing in 2000 and returned to New Zealand as head coach to Bay of Plenty, who played against the 2005 British & Irish Lions in 2005. He also coached at Canterbury Crusaders in the Super 14 as a forwards coach In 2006 he headed back to France, this time as head coach of Clermont Auvergne where he had a very successful time winning the French Top 14 and reaching two European Cup finals. In 2014 he was made head coach of Scotland where he rebuilt the Scotland team to perform brilliantly in the 2015 World Cup, narrowly and controversially, losing to Australia in the quarter finals. Vern is now moving on to Montpelier as head coach starting next season. It will be great to see Vern back here at Huddersfield again and we wish him all the very best.
