WHARFEDALE DEFEAT HUDDERSFIELD TO TAKE COLTS COUNTY CUP.
Wharfedale recorded a 32 points to 13 win over Huddersfield to take the Yorkshire County Colts Cup at Lockwood Park. The Under 18’s from the Yorkshire Dales were deserved victors running clean first phase ball throughout the game to good effect. Their powerful pack dominated the scrummages and their lively back line ensured that Huddersfield had plenty of tackling to do.
Huddersfield made a brisk start and were five points up after two minutes when lock Matthew Boothroyd scored the first try of the game following a charge down close to the Wharfedale line. However Dale struck back almost immediately when Sam Dickenson broke clear to score the first of his teams five tries which fly half Louis Verity had no difficulty converting.
A long range penalty by Ethan Myers briefly restored the lead for Huddersfield but one by Verity and a second try for Dale by winger by Owen Bullock had them seven points up at half time.
Two minutes into the second half Dale extended their lead when full back Omar Kaup-Samuels rounded off a left wing break with a touch down. Further tries by Jordan Van Beek and Henry Macnab, the latter converted by Verity, sealed the win for them.
Huddersfield displayed a never say die attitude and their efforts were rewarded with the final score of the game. Winger Jake Haynes, who had tackled his heart out in defence, made space for himself to nip through for a neat try.
Although it was Wharfedale who took the cup home Huddersfield did end the day with silverware. They were awarded the Yorkshire Premier Division league trophy at the end of the match presentation having lost just one of their matches in their 2018/19 campaign.
