Barnsley Seconds 3 – 51 Huddersfield Falcons
(Tries: Morris x 4, Scrimshaw, Granger, Wilkinson, Owen, Cadogan. Cons: Scrimshaw x 6. Pen: Scrimshaw)
The Falcons kicked off their season in style with a resounding nine try victory at Barnsley.
Olly Scrimshaw was first to cross after 5 mins of play. A lovely break from Harris Morris in midfield was well supported by Scrimshaw down the left flank. A dummy and a step saw him glide over. Conversion missed.
Barnsley’s only points and to be fair their only chance of scoring came after 8 minutes, when a series of dubious break down decisions gave them a kick at the posts which was duly converted. After that, with the defensive line a little more disciplined, it was one way traffic.
A dominant scrum followed by a flowing set move by the backs put Morris through one and one with the full back. Silky hips saw him step past and score under the posts.
Harris scored again after just 25 minutes when quick line out ball allowed another flowing move to put him through. Fast feet and sheer pace beat the full back again.
Harry Granger was next to score. Quick hands down the back line found him on the right wing. A dummy and swerve of the hips saw him score a nice try.
Arthur Wilkinson scored a lovely counter attacking try. Phil Cadogan fielded a kick out of defence from Barnsley and floated a pass to Wilkinson coming on at pace. Outrageous stepping beat most of the Barnsley backline and he ghosted in under the posts.
A good break from John Sedgwick mid-field saw him gain yards, before floating out a lovely long pass to Morris who sped down the line to score his hat trick.
Tom Owen scored a deserved try after being rock solid in defence. Phil Cadogan again making yards with real pace almost went in himself but a last ditch attempt by the Barnsley full back tripped him. Phil still had the skill to offload to the supporting Owen.
Cadogan did then get the score he deserved after a fantastic debut for Huddersfield. Having made yards showing real pace all day he was on the end of another break by Harris Morris who whipped out the pass to put Phil in the corner.
The final try came from the sizzling centre partnership again. Following a kick through from Scrimshaw the Barnsley full back gathered the ball safely however, he was enveloped by Tom ‘ shelling peas’ Owen who stripped him and unselfishly passed to Morris who simply walked in over the line.
A solid performance away from home to start the season.
