Live rugby at Lockwood Park was enjoyed last weekend. On Saturday morning our Under 14’s hosted Hull Ionians. The rain poured down none stop throughout the game, but it failed to dampen spirits. In spite of the conditions the action was non-stop and end to end and the commitment total.
Honours were even at the end of the first half but the visitors had the better second period and ran out winners 22 points to 12.
The boys changed in the stands because we could not open the dressing rooms in order to comply with regulations. Lunch was provided by the mobile ‘chippy’ van parked outside the club. Afterwards players and supporters were able to enjoy refreshments in the balcony marquee.
On Sunday morning a full set of mini section fixtures against Sandal took place on the back pitches. Thankfully the rain had ceased by then. Our new Verti-drainer, which groundsman Mark Storer has used during his springtime pitch preparation, has been highly effective because there was not a trace of standing water following Saturday’s inundation of the grounds.
It turned out to be a joyful morning for players and spectators alike. Grateful thanks go to Under 12’s coach Shaun Hayes for setting up the games.
The previous Wednesday evening the Under 15’s had their first run out at Lockwood Park this season. This too was against Sandal. It was a cracking, close fought game which the visitors shaded 29-24 with a late score.
