It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of former YM President Maurice Mosley. Maurice was a friend to many at Lockwood Park and the Club would like to pass on their condolences to David & family, friends and all at YM.
Maurice passed away in the early hours of Saturday 23 April at home peacefully in bed. Maurice was 92 years old.
Maurice first joined the [Milnsbridge] YMCA in 1940 as an 11-year-old. Arriving later at Laund Hill in the early 1960s and finally hanging his boots up in the mid-1980s. A fiercely competitive scrum half (and later hooker) Maurice was sometimes referred to as Early Bath or simply EB as the referee sent him back the changing room before full time.
Maurice was instrumental in the long-term vision of Laund Hill including the development of the club house in the early 1990s and the success the club enjoyed on and off the field. It was Maurice’s belief that the YM rugby club should remain an amateur one and the money saved from paying players should be reinvested into the complex for future generations.
Off the field Maurice was a gentleman and he epitomised everything that made playing for the YM so good. He was always friendly, mischievous, witty, a slightly bit eccentric but most of all just a good man. He was very generous both with his time and his money and has had arguably had the biggest impact at the YM over the years. Maurice was part of the soul and fabric of Laund Hill and will be missed by everyone that knew him.
Maurice’s funeral will be Friday 10 June at 13:30 at Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Street (HD1 4DT) followed by a short committal at Park Wood Crematorium (HX5 9HZ) at 15:00. A celebration of Maurice’s life will be held at Laund Hill Community Club (HD3 3XF) from 16:00.
