Under 15’s tour report

U15s Tour to Broadstreet Rugby Club in Coventry

On 7 & 8 May past 25 lads, our 6 coaches and numerous Mum’s and Dad’s went on a pilgrimage to Coventry to play a 3way 7s Tournament v Broadstreet RC and another visiting club, Beaconsfield RC.

After a day of water sports at Cliff Lakes nr. Birmingham and the usual after hours activities at the University of Warwick’s Conference Centre where we stayed overnight, the lads awoke on the Sunday keen for a new challenge………. the parent’s were possibly not so keen and many looked pretty dusty at breakfast. But we hopped the coach and made the 20minute trip down the road to take on a club from the Midlands and a club from the deep dark south………. who would be the champions?

We split out squad into 3 teams, Beaconsfield the same – 3 teams and Broadstreet – 2 teams. Two pools playing round robin games with the winner of each pool playing off in the final……… or so we hoped. Each team played 3 x 15min games (7.5min halves). The pace was fast, furious and played on great surfaces, as Broadstreet will host all the countries playing in the Commonwealth Games 7s tournament in July/August – squads using this as their base and training facility – the pitches were in tip top nick.

It was a warm day and even the lads were suffering, the open nature of 7s rugby and the increased pace taking its toll. The lads were struggling after 2 games each. Beaconsfield has played 7s competition rugby before and the experience told. At the halfway mark their 3 teams were in the top 4, with one of our sides joining. We managed to get all the pool games played and the interim pool results looked like this:-

Beaconsfield A – 3 wins

Beaconsfield B – 2wins

Beaconfield C – 2 wins

Huddersfield A – 2wins

Huddersfield B – 2 wins

Huddersfield C – 1 win

Broadstreet A – 1 win

Braodstreet B – 1 win

The lads didn’t have the energy left to play a final, so the tournament was awarded to Beaconsfield A.

A great weekend had by all and a new fast game of rugby discovered.

A big thanks was passed on to Broadstreet – greats hosts – who opened up the club and the facilities for us on the day.
