Congratulations to Mark Birch, Dereck Tasker and Pam Wade who were made Honorary Life Members of HRUFC at this year’s AGM. The three have made an immense contribution to the club over a long number of years and the awards are recognition of their devoted service.
Mark began playing rugby for Huddersfield in the Age Grade and went on to become the youngest captain of the First XV in 1983. His playing career continued long after his first team years, ending with a spell as a popular and charismatic captain of the A Team. He served as President of HRUFC from 2008-10, being instrumental in the club ‘centenary’ celebrations, and has been Chairman of the club since 2012. The current strength of the club is a testament to his business skills and tireless hard work, which were particularly evident during the COVID crisis. He was named Clubman of the Year in 2020 and is an active member of the club crown green bowling section.
Dereck joined the club as a squash playing member in the Waterloo days. He served as Treasurer of HRUFC from 1980 to 2012 and was elected President of the club, 2018-20. His current responsibilities include Chairman of Grounds, Treasurer of HRUFC Bowling Club and captain of the veterans bowling team. He is two time winner of the Clubman of the Year award. Throughout his time as a member he has brought his skills as a chartered accountant to bear for the benefit of the club, single handedly pursuing and securing many lucrative financial grants, from various sources, for club projects.
Pam is the widow of former club President Jack Wade. Jack was the driving force behind the club’s relocation and redevelopment and Pam was a constant support to him throughout. The couple have been generous sponsors of the club during their time as members and the main stand was named in their honour in recognition of their invaluable contribution. After Jack’s passing Pam continued his work in legacy and is a loyal supporter of all our teams. Pam is a trustee of the Leonard Cowburn charity.
