It is with much sadness that we announce that Geoff Ainley passed away on 16th October 2022 at Rastrick Care Home following a long period of dementia and stroke.
He leaves children Rachel and Guy, grandchildren Francesca, Alexander, Frank, Sophie and great-granddaughter Everly. (wife Nancy died in 2015 but not sure how to word this)
Geoff was born and raised in Huddersfield, schooled at St James’ Grammar School Almondbury. On leaving school Geoff worked at John Crowthers & Son, Milnsbridge starting as a designer before moving to Firth Brothers, Shepley as production director in the late 1970s. Geoff acquired Moldgreen Post Office in 1982 where he served as sub-postmaster until retirement in 1998.
Geoff was a convert from the round ball game and encouraged by friends, the late Ian and Bill Fiddes, to come down to Waterloo and try out. He played for the second team during the fifties and early sixties (not sure if the team or time frame is correct). Since retirement from playing, Geoff maintained membership of the club as a patron and supported the First XV at home games until he was no longer well enough to do so.
The funeral service will take place at Huddersfield Crematorium on Wednesday 16th November 2022 at 11.15am. Family flowers only please but donations in lieu if so desired to DementiaUK. A donation plate will be available at the crematorium for this purpose. Will friends please accept this intimation and meet at the crematorium.
