As we walked out to the pitch at 13:00 we had no idea that we were the final piece of a clean sweep for all HRUFC teams this weekend. I’ll avoid the tension, WE DID IT!!!
With both squads fielding 22 men it was agreed to play 4 x 20 minute sessions. For those who manage subs, trust me it was a dream.
In the first session it was a good 10 minutes before we got our hands on the ball. When we did it was magic with good control and a try for Charlie Otter; it’s always a bit more special when a front row player scores.
The second session was our strongest with a try for Josh Cooke in the corner. Josh, the next time you are in that position please consider the kicker and go under the posts.
The start of the 3rd session was delayed as the Sheffield squad were being given an almighty bollocking. It seemed to work as they opened with a try. No bother to our lads as Tom Lay (just out of retirement) scored back minutes later. 5 – 15 up, it was ours to lose as we entered the final 20.
In 2 previous outings we have blown it, but today the resolve was strong and we ended 12-15 winners.
A strong performance throughout the team albeit with too many penalties given away.
To end there has to be a special mention for Max Shelton who made an excellent pass to their 10 who scored from it. Thank goodness for the offside rule! Harry Thomason also deserves a mention as he single handedly tackled the biggest lad in Yorkshire and managed to knock him backwards.
Hull Ionians next week. Bring it on!
