Tynedale 47-17 Huddersfield….Match Report

Tynedale take a grip to earn fine win over Field.

In a keenly contested first half, tries by Ed Barber and Ed Brown for Huddersfield got them back into the game after early scores by Tynedale. A third by Lewis Workman mid-way through the second half increased their tally but Tynedale ran away with the game, scoring five more on either side of it, to make the final score 47-17.

The National 2 North game in Northumberland wasn’t as one sided as the scoreline suggests. Gaz Lewis, director of rugby at Huddersfield, gave his verdict after the game saying, ‘We worked hard to get back in the game and had a great opportunity to turn this into victory. However, Tynedale capitalised on our individual errors with and without the ball and ran out convincing winners.’

Scrum half James Telford and flanker Ralph Johnston were the early scorers for Tynedale, Telford crossed after 8 minutes with Johnston touching down at the back of a maul after good work by the forwards shortly afterwards. Fly half Jake Rodgers converted both.

Field were on the score sheet on 29 minutes, Barber slicing through the defence on a superb running line. Brown’s score came 8 minutes later after a fine break down the left wing by Kian Stewart who drew in the full back and put Brown in with a neat pass. Matt Law was wide with both conversion attempts leaving the score 14-10 at half time.

Field made a strong start to the second half but when a kick out of defence was charged down 10 minutes into it and centre William Miller cashed in with a try the game started to slip from their grasp. Further tries by centre Joseph Lilley and prop Ben Haigh in the next quarter of an hour put the game out of reach. Lilley’s score came after he cleverly chipped the defence and took the catch to race home with Haigh kicking through and cashing in for his. Rodgers and replacement fly half Joshua Leslie converted the first and last of the three tries.

Workman’s score on 69 minutes saw the powerful centre add his solo skills to an impressive handling move to break clear. Will Milner, who had come off the bench to take over at 10, added the extras from the touchline.

The final 10 minutes belonged to Tynedale. Full back Robert Parker rounded off an excellent backs move with a sixth try for the team with Miller taking advantage of some indifferent defending to bag his second of the game. Leslie successfully converted both of them.

The defeat means Field slip down a place, to 11th, in the table. There is no National 2 North game next Saturday. Field take on Sheffield in their penultimate home game on 15th April.
