In recent years Huddersfield Town legend Marcus Stewart has become a popular figure at Huddersfield RUFC and a loyal supporter of our team.

Both the former Premiership football star’s sons, Kian and Finlay, have represented our First XV with distinction and were last season’s joint top leading try scorers.

As most will know Marcus has been diagnosed with MND and being the competitor that he is has decided to do something to raise awareness of and funds for the fight against the dreadful condition.

The MND cause is one that has already been embraced by the nation’s rugby community following the high profile campaigns of Scottish international rugby union star Doddie Weir and rugby league legend Rob Burrow, both of whom have been stricken by the disease. The efforts of Rob Burrow’s friend and Leeds Rhinos team mate Kevin Sinfield in particular have touched the nation’s hearts and been nothing short of amazing.

On the weekend of 22nd to 24th March Marcus and fellow former  football professional Stephen Darby, who both have MND, are doing their bit to further the cause through a 175 mile walk from Bradford to Liverpool taking in 17 football stadiums that the pair have graced in their playing careers. The Huddersfield leg of the ‘March of the Day’ leaves the John Smith’s Stadium at 4pm on Friday 22nd March.

Club members and friends of Marcus are invited to put together teams of 6 people to support the march, full details of of the event and how to enter a team can be found on the links below. As club groups our intention is to join those in the core group as it leaves the John Smiths and walk with them into the town centre. There the plan will be to divert to Lockwood Park to add our ground to the list of those already scheduled for a visit and show  HRUFC’s solidarity with the game of football’s noble endeavour.

Key individuals are needed to bring together friends to form teams and register them with the charity. Former club president Richard Sykes is coordinating club support and once registration is complete group leaders are asked to notify Richard by email at r.k.sykes2@gmail.com who will then keep them informed of ongoing developments.

*The deadline for team registration and ordering t-shirts is 22nd February…please don’t miss out!

‘Marching for Marcus, Side by Side with Stephen.’
