Women and girls rugby has been one of the major growth areas in sport in recent times and Huddersfield RUFC are are holding a Spring programme of introductory sessions to encourage more girls to ‘Give Rugby a Go’.

The club is running 5 sessions which will be held on Tuesday evenings between 6 and 7pm which are free to attend and open to all girls in school years from 6 to 13, commencing on 5th March. The sessions are being held at Huddersfield’s Lockwood Park ground and will be led by head of women and girl’s rugby at the club, Jess Bunyard, who is DBS checked and a very well qualified and vastly experienced coach.

She said, ‘The girls can choose to attend as many or as few of the sessions as they wish. The activities in each session will all be different. The emphasis in all of them will be on fitness, fun and friendship. We aim to give girls who are new to rugby an enjoyable experience and the opportunity to learn all about this fantastic sport. Girls won’t need any special equipment, just trainers or boots, some outdoor sports clothes and a water bottle.’

The Lockwood Park club has a large and very successful youth section. It runs ‘Age Grade’ teams from Under 6 to Under 16 and a Colts, Under 17/18 team. It is proud of being the ‘Birthplace of Mini and Junior Club Rugby’ which it founded back in 1969. At junior level boys and girls can play rugby in the same team up to the age of 12 thereafter they play in single sex teams and the club is hopeful that their Spring time initiative will draw more girls to the club.
