Huddersfield slumped to a humbling 92-7 away defeat at Sedgley Park. The Tigers ran in 14 tries, with centre Joe Bedlow scoring 4 of them. A single first half try, by winger Charlie Foreman, converted by Tom Scott, the only reward for Huddersfield's endeavours.
Sedgley Park are top in National 2 North, with a 100% win record, and look well placed to take the title and return to National 1, from which they were relegated last season.
Huddersfield head coach, Callum Thompson, played in the game. He said: “We knew we were in for a tough match but we didn't take a backward step for 60 minutes, even though they were clearly the better side.
“I was pleased with the way that the young lads from the Falcons (second team) stepped up and was proud of the way they performed.
“In the last 20 minutes Tigers' knew they had broken us and were clinical and ruthless.
“Our season won't be defined by games against the top 3 or 4 teams. We have to put things into perspective and prepare for our next game.”
Field started and ended the first half very competitively and tried to play a fast game when in possession.
Young scrum half, Louis Rayner, impressed on his debut with brisk work at the breakdown and behind the scrum, and 18 year old fly half, Tom Scott, looked lively and showed enterprise with some clever cross field kicks when options in front of him were closed down.
However, when they lost possession, Field were punished with ruthless effectiveness by a very powerful Tigers team
With ball in hand the home side dented and breeched Field's midfield defence and stretched their line to both flanks with slick running and passing.
After 18 minutes they were well in command and had 3 converted tries in the bag. Bedlow opened the scoring on 10 minutes and Foreman's try came in swift reply to Tigers' third.
Winger Ben Cawte-Davey made a 20 metre break after the re-start. At the breakdown Scott crafted a perfect cross-field kick to Foreman, who made good ground up the right wing. The ball came back inside and, after some quick re-cycling, it was returned to Foreman who crossed in the corner.
Scott landed an excellent conversion from the touchline.
Tigers' hit straight back and by the half hour had notched 2 more tries, to secure the bonus point and virtually seal the win.
Field produced their best rugby in a 10 minute spell at the end of the first half and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Rayner crossed between the posts but play came back due to a knock on in the build up.
The first half closed with Field pressing, but halted by brutal defensive work by Tigers, with the score at 33-7.
Field spent the entire second half defending.
They were stung by two more tries after the interval and blitzed with another 7 in a devastating final quarter.
In the last minute lock Connor James completed the try scoring with his second and Oli Glasse matched his points tally, with his fifth conversion, to end the game.
Field have won 1 from 5 to date and travel to take on Heath, who have an identical record, next Saturday. With teams like Tigers setting the pace, the game promises to be a good indicator of Field's place in the North 2 pecking order.
Thank you Mark. I thought it was a bit of a cliche, but it seemed appropriate, given the scoreline. Not much fun writing that match up. Hoping for better things on Saturday.
A disappointing result but great reporting as always Richard Sykes
Tough day at the office Richard. A good one to get out of the way. Onwards and upwards.
