U6’s

Welcome to HRUFC’s U6’s

It can be daunting when thinking of introducing your young daughter or son to rugby when they’re U6.  If nothing else, it can be a rough and tumble sport that parents and guardians can have understandable concerns about.

HRUFC’s U6’s management team and coaches are parents too and have shared similar concerns.  We do everything we can to ensure that those concerns are answered before they happen.

Let’s start at the beginning.  The first step on your child’s rugby pathway is the RFU’s Age Grade programme.  This is a structured method of training children in the fun, skills and laws according to their age.  For example, contact tackling is not allowed until children are in the U9’s, whilst line-outs and scrummaging isn’t introduced until they are in their teens.

Here’s a quick summary of some other FAQ’s:

  • A player’s age grade is determined by their age at midnight on 31st August at the beginning of each Season and that age grade applies for the whole Season.
  • Boy’s and girls can train and play together until they reach the U12’s.
  • Competitive tag rugby isn’t introduced until the U7’s.
  • We use smaller, size 3 balls, for easier handling.
  • We train on Sunday at 10am-11am, the same time as the U7’s – U9’s Age Grades.
  • To put player enjoyment above all else whist developing a positive attitude towards physical activity and multi-sport skills.
  • All our HRUFC’s coaches and managers are DBS checked and RFU trained to work with young players.
  • We have additional support and supervision from our experienced Age Grade Management team
  • And then there’re the strict RFU Age Grade Codes that HRUFC fully subscribes to.

Our ambition is to encourage our youngest players to put their first foot on their own rugby pathway so that enjoying the game for longer and, hopefully, into their adult years.

If you have any questions please contact us directly or come along to a Sunday training session 10am-11am.

Kit

As with any sport players need specific kit.  We ask that ask of our Age Grade players have rugby boots, socks, shorts, shirt, mouth guard and water bottle

Players are expected to wear full club kit for fixture with other clubs.  Club kit does not have to be worn for training, other kit can be worn.

All official club kit can be bought from our suppliers O’Neill’s via this link.

Please be aware that it can get very cold in winter.  Players should wear plenty of layers to ensure that they can remain warm during sessions.

Wearing layers also means that players can discard items as they warm up and put them on again as they cool down.  Please note that, as a safety measure, training tops should be without zips.

MAKE SURE THAT EVERY PIECE OF YOUR CHILD’S KIT IS LABELLED WITH THEIR NAME.

For our advice and recommendations about items of kit please follow the links:
